Who is Draupadi Murmu?

Draupadi Murmu (born 20 June 1958) is an Indian politician serving as the 15th and current President of India. She is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). She is the first person belonging to the tribal community to be elected as the President of India. Murmu is the second woman after Pratibha Patil to serve as the President of India. She is the second person from Odisha to hold the post and the youngest President of the country. Murmu is the first President to be born after India's independence. Before becoming the President, she served in the Cabinet of the Government of Odisha from 2000 to 2004 in various departments. He took over as the ninth Governor of Jharkhand from 2015 to 2021.

Marriage of Draupadi Murmu

Draupadi Murmu and Shyam Charan both started liking each other. Both want to live a further life together. For the consent of the family, Shyam Charan reached Murmu's house with a marriage proposal. Some relatives of Shyam Charan lived in the village of Draupadi Murmu. In such a situation, Shyam Charan went to his house with his uncle and relatives to keep his word. Despite all the efforts, Draupadi Murmu's father Biranchi Narayan Tudu denied this relationship. Shyam Charan was also not going to back down. He had decided that if he would marry Draupadi would marry Murmu only. Draupadi Murmu had also clearly said in the house that she would marry Shyam Charan only. Shyam Charan camped in the village of Draupadi Murmu for three days. Draupadi Murmu's father, exhausted, approved the relationship.

Draupadi had agreed to Murmu's father for marriage. Now Shyam Charan and Draupadi Murmu's family members sit on the dowry conversation. It was decided that a cow, a bull, and 16 pairs of clothes would be given to Draupadi Murmu from Shyam Charan's house. The families of both agreed to this. In fact, in the Santhal community from which Draupadi Murmu comes, dowry is given to the girl's family members on behalf of the boy. Draupadi Murmu got married to Shyam Charan a few days later.

Draupadi Murmu, who grew up in the small village of Baidaposi in Rairangpur, Odisha, tells about her teacher Basudev Behera that once the drain of the village was overflowing due to heavy rains. She reached the school by swimming across the overflowing drain.

Draupadi Murmu, who reached Bhubaneswar with the teacher, climbed onto the stage during a program and told the then minister Karthik Tudu - there is no high school in my village, I have to study further. After which he was admitted to the tribal residential school in Bhubaneswar.

Draupadi Murmu, who was giving free education to the children, was persuaded by the BJP leaders for three months to contest the election of the Ward Council in 1997, then agreed. Next, she became an MLA and then a minister. She returned home after losing the eldest son.

Putti Mai remained for the village


Even though Draupadi Murmu was the governor for six years, she remained puti mai (little girl) for Rairangpur. Whenever I went there I used to walk without security, most would meet. I would say - I have grown up here, this is the land of work, if I do not meet the people here, then there will be sorrow.


The political life of Draupadi Murmu

Draupadi Murmu is the second president of the state. Earlier in 2007, Pratibha Devi Singh Patil became the first president of the country. Earlier in 1969, VV Giri became the fourth President of the country who was also from Odisha. Draupadi Murmu defeated the opposition candidate Yashwant Singha by securing 64 percent votes. Now she is the president of India.
