Next Indian general election

The 18th Lok Sabha will be filled at the upcoming general election in India, which is anticipated to take place in or before May 2024.

Background

The Lok Sabha's term is set to expire on June 16, 2024. The most recent general elections took place in April and May of 2019. Following the election, the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance established the union government, with Narendra Modi serving as Prime Minister.

Electoral system

Using first-past-the-post voting, all 543 elected MPs are chosen from single-member constituencies. The two seats that were set out for the Anglo-Indian community were essentially abolished by the 104th amendment to the constitution.


A valid voter identification card issued by the Election Commission of India or an equivalent is required for all eligible voters, who must be Indian nationals, 18 years of age or older, and regular residents of the constituency's polling place.


Some people are prohibited from voting after being found guilty of electoral or other crimes.


In accordance with Article 83 of the Indian Constitution, the Lok Sabha elections must be held once every five years.

Parties and alliances

National Democratic Alliance

The right-wing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is the leader of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), a broad political coalition in India that was established in 1998 and currently governs the country as well as 18 Indian states and one Union Territory.


Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the first chairman, served as the prime minister. Former Deputy Prime Minister L. K. Advani assumed the role of chairman in 2004 and held it until 2014. Since then, Amit Shah has held the position. In power from 1998 until 2004, the coalition. With a combined vote share of 38.5% in the 2014 general elections, the alliance regained power. Its leader Narendra Modi was sworn in as India's prime minister on May 26, 2014. The alliance gained more seats in the general election of 2019, increasing its total to 353 MPs with a combined vote share of 45.43%.

United Progressive Alliance

In India, the United Progressive Alliance is a coalition of mostly left-leaning political parties. After the general election in 2004, it was established. The largest party in the UPA is the Indian National Congress. In 2004 it joined forces with other left-leaning parties to create a government after no party could win a majority.

  • The NDA won 353 seats overall in the 2019 elections.

  • The UPA gained 91 seats in total in the 2019 elections.
