Who is Nirmala Sitaraman ?

Nirmala Sitaraman (Tamil: Nirmala  Sitaraman   ; born: 18 August 1959) is the Finance Minister of India.  She was the Defense Minister from September 2017 to May 2019 and before that, she was the Minister of State for Commerce and Industry (Independent Charge) and Finance and Corporate Affairs of India.  She is affiliated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and has also been the party's national spokesperson. Nirmala Sitaraman is India's first full-time woman finance minister;  However, Indira Gandhi took over this ministry as an additional charge while she was the Prime Minister.





Nirmala Sitharaman: Career before joining politics

Nirmala performed as an agent at Habitat (a home decor store in London). He also performed as an assistant to the Economist of the Association of Agricultural Engineers (UK).

He has also helped as a Senior Manager (Research and Development Department) for PwC (PricewaterhouseCoopers) and the BBC World Service. She was also a partner of the National Commission for Women. 

Political life


Nirmala Sitaraman was a member of the National Commission for Women from 2003 to 2005. She has been the spokesperson of the Bharatiya Janata Party as well as the Minister of State for Commerce and Industry (Independent Charge) and Finance and Corporate Affairs of India till 03 September 2017 and on 03 September 2017, she was made the Defense Minister in the Government of Shri Narendra Modi. She is the second woman leader of independent India and the first full-time woman defense minister independently, after Mrs. Indira Gandhi, to head the Defense Ministry of India.


In February 2020, Sitaraman made a controversial statement during his second budget speech that the Indus script – hieroglyphs – has been deciphered, and the seals of the Sarasvati-Indus Civilization and Harappan are notable, dating back to 3300 BC.

Early life and career


Nirmala Sitaraman completed her graduation (economics) from Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College, Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu in 1980. Nirmala Sitaraman did her M.Phil. in International Studies from Jawaharlal Nehru University (GENE).


Nirmala Sitaraman has also worked with PricewaterhouseCoopers as Senior Manager (Research & Analysis). He also worked for the BBC World Service for some time. Nirmala Sitaraman is one of the founders of Pranava School located in Hyderabad.

Personal life

Nirmala Sitaraman is married to Dr. Parakal Prabhakar who is an alumnus of Jawaharlal Nehru University and the London School of Economics.  He is a politician, political commentator, popular TV anchor, and intellectual. Currently Dr. Parakala Prabhakar is MD at Rightfolio (www.rightfolio.co.in).

Relief package amid COVID-19 pandemic


Following the COVID-19 crisis, Sitharaman became the in-charge of the COVID-19 Economic Response Task Force.


He unveiled the 20 lakh crore relief package 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan' through a press conference at the National Media Centre. The Rs 20 lakh crore relief package includes the previous packages announced by the Government of India and the central bank i.e. RBI to deal with the coronavirus crisis.


On Tuesday, PM Modi, in his fifth address to the nation, since the nationwide lockdown, announced this package to make India self-reliant and urged people to be vocal about the use of local products, i.e. Swadeshi. "This will not just be an economic package, but a reform stimulation, a mood overhaul, and a jab in governance," twittered Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.


Both the Prime Minister and the Finance Minister indicated that this huge package will revive the Indian economy and support people from all walks of life amid the pandemic.

1- Nirmala Sitharaman was awarded the Outstanding Alumnus Award by JNU in 2019.


2- She was also rated by Forbes magazine as the 34th most strong woman in the world in 2019.


Nirmala is one of the most powerful women India has seen. From being the first full-time woman Finance Minister to holding multiple positions in the Union Cabinet, Sitharaman is an inspiration to all women in the country.
